Roofing considerations in the winter

Winter weather can be dangerous for all roofing types, including green roofs, flat roofs and pitched roofs. But what are the important roofing considerations in winter, and what should you bear in mind during the winter months, to keep your roof safe and secure? And how can you be sure of the right results?

What are the important roofing considerations in the winter?

So what should be looking out for this winter, to keep your roof in good condition? Well, there are several potential hazards, and these include:

  • Snow- as beautiful as snow might look on your roof, this is a heavy load for your roof to bear. Any structural weakness in your roof deck will struggle to cope with the additional weight. And once the temperature drops, this snow will turn to ice. This can cause cracks in some roof membranes, as the temperature change causes natural expansion and contraction of the roof membrane.
  • Gutters- keeping your gutters clean all year round is something you must consider. Blocked gutters cant drain the water from the roof, and with snow and heavy rain expected this winter, your roof could become compromised, if this does not drain efficiently. Make sure you check your gutters and down-pipes and get rid of any blockages, before any snow can settle.
  • Flashing- Before any snow sets on your roof, you should inspect the flashing, or hire a professional to take a look at it for you. Over time flashing can wear away, and this leaves small, tiny gaps between your roof and chimney, or bricks. This will allow water to enter your wall cavities, and it can result in penetrating damp.
