New felt roof for 2018

JMS roofing Birmingham

While felt roofing is a popular commercial roof choice, it is also used throughout domestic properties too, especially for extensions and garages. But over time your felt roof will suffer from wear and tear, and get damaged. With 2018 looming on the horizon, why not consider a new felt roof? Here at JMS Roofing, we are roofing specialists. We offer a range of high quality roofing services, including both built up felt roofing and high performance felt roofing. As a result, we have produced this guide to help you select a new felt roof for 2018.

Built up felt roofing

Created from a glass fibre mat, coated on both sides with a bituminous coating, built up felt roofing is made by bonding layers of these mats together, one on top of the other. As each one is bonded to the next, built up felt roofing is waterproof, hard-wearing and incredibly durable. This makes it the perfect choice for a roofing material, as it will keep out the rain and withstand the full range of weather conditions.

To complete the felt roofing, a layer of sand, gravel or chippings will be added to the top. This offers the felt some protection from the sun.
In general, a built up felt roof will last for around 15 years.

High performance felt roofing

The only difference between the two forms of felt roof is the material that the mats are made from. High performance felt roofing uses polyester mats instead of the glass fibre mat. This makes it more lightweight and flexible, suitable for a range of more modern buildings.
High performance felt also lasts twice as long as built up felt, with a lifespan of around 30 years.
